I'm giving it five stars for two reasons:1) Out of respect for tremendous amount of work Mr. Koehler has done to give us this study.2) If (for whatever reason) you are serious about the subject – this is a must read.To my humble opinion, the book has some drawbacks:1) At times, it's a little hard to follow the flow of information. Introduction and the first chapter (about minister Milke) are straightforward, but after that it gets somewhat discombobulated – it alternates between different periods in time. I found myself going back a lot, just to keep track of the structure of the organization and to connect the dots.2) Mr. Koehler spends quite a bit of time to remind us every now and then how terrible Stazi was. I dare say it is not necessary (as in 'reiterating the obvious').3) The stile of the narration is rather uneven. Some situations are described in great detail (to the point of being almost superfluous), others are only mentioned briefly – so they appear superficial.Still – five stars, no doubt. There aren't that many books on the subject; this one is indispensable.
after visiting the Stasi HQ museum in Berlin last year I was intrigued by the topic of the East German secret police. Koehler writes a good read that tells many individual stories that paint a good picture of the life and times of a secret police that surpassed the Nazi Gestapo in its depth, staffing, and ruthlessness. It becomes quite obvious that the Soviets and their KGB were as ruthless towards their captive german slaves as they were towards their own during the reign of Stalin, and portrays just how inhumane people become when given tacit permission. We owe ourselves a look at these societies so we can stand guard over a free press and open society that is free from tyranny. John's footnotes demonstrate the depth of his research and first-hand stories of the oppressed and the oppressors. I highly recommend this book that can be even be read in spurts as it's many stories are self-contained.
A book that shows that laws can do nothing against secret crimes. Targets were studied, enveloped, their reputations disgraced in what what was both a calculated and lustful methodology bordering the absurd. Lying, deception, ruses de guerre, exacting the utmost degree of obedience, reinforcing a collective behaviour with immeasurable moral repercussions . Well may the citizen of the civilized world stand helpless in a world made strange. The great German Fatherland lost, its common values divided and debased. This book must be studied and remembered.
This account is a nice combination of solid scholarship and popular narrative. To read it is to get the historical chronology of facts combined with a very readable account of the stories accompanying the facts. If you only want to read one book on this subject, let it be this one.
I started out with great enthusiasm as I find the subject intriguing, but after myriad case histories and examples I find the read becoming just more and more of the same. I'm now into skipping pages only to find it's still on the same tack, laboring the same point and I'm wondering if this is leading somewhere or if it will just continue on in the same vein till the end. I'm only half way there and now contemplating giving it up as it's becoming a chore to keep wading through it. I can't dispute it's been well researched, but my feeling is you need to take the book somewhere beyond an endless string of anecdotes.
An insider insight on the DDR and the dreaded Stasi. Reads like a thriller.
This book proved to be an excellent history of the East Germansecret police force, the Stasi. The author was able to use documentation obtained after the fall of Communist East Germanyto verify the information in this book. You are given details of the tactics that were employed by the Stasi. The author givesfrightening closeups of the control that the Stasi had over the citizens of East Germany. You are also shown the interworkings of the Stasi with various terrorist groups. You are also told of their dealings with Carlos the notorious terrorist. The background and biography of the leader of the Stasi are also highlighted. This is one of the better books that you will find on the Stasi. Buy it and read it.
I grew-up in the DDR, was expelled for political reasons in 1986 and then returned to The State of Brandenburg in 1991 only to leave again 9 years later when I realized how little has really changed. This book was fascinating reading for anyone that had a 3 volumne "file" with the Stasi. It should also be interesting for anyone looking to understand not only what drove the DDR State Apparatus but also what intimidated and kept the general population in line. The style sometimes reads like a college textbook but the story itself is anything but textbook-like and the seedy & scandalous details keep ones attention despite the books sometimes too-intellectual feel.
