This is a great memoir Hotchner has written containing personal glimpses of Hemingway during the waning years of his career, ironically at the high water mark of his popular acclaim. I especially enjoyed the conversations and dialogue he had with Papa and Hotch's observations during his declining health. Much is revealed about the creation of many of his novels and short stories though the reader should be tempered by Hemingway's penchant for burnishing his memories & reputation at times. The author does an admirable job of providing detail and context about his many travels & visits with Papa. You will come away with a better understanding of Hemingway through a personal perspective, albeit without some of the more critical coverage by other biographers such as Carlos Baker & Denis Brian. Both of them provide a lot of research presented in a highly objective way. To my knowledge no other friend of Hemingway's has provided as rich an account of their relationship with him. I highly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed many of Hemingway's novels and short stories and wants to learn more about one of the finest writers of the 20th century.
I read "Papa Hemingway" many years ago in Germany...and in German. Always having been a huge fan of Hemingway, I read this book from first to last page, without putting it down once. Then I read it a second time; in the English original version. I was even more amazed and in awe... A.E. Hotchner's biography is absolutely stunning; it is not only beautifully written...it is authentic and sincere, it is filled with conflicting emotions; it simply is utterly captivating. No other Hemingway biography (and I've painfully worked my way through several) comes even somewhat close to Hotchner's superb depiction of Ernest Hemingway; the man, the writer, the lover, the hedonistic and complex character he truly was.A brilliant book.(I have read it at least 4 times by now; it never gets boring.)
Hotchner brought Papa to life. The book held my attention and interest from cover to cover. Constantly found myself reading between the lines and behind the scenes. This biography provided information that has made reading Papa's works more insightful and relatable to the author.
My husband and I both read this book before taking a trip to Havana Cuba. It made our tours a little more meaningful. It not only gave us insight into Hemingway's life but also into Cuba before the revolution. It was a very compelling biography. I recommend it
A great memoir that provided a couple of details I hadn't found in other sources. While it's clear Hotchner is giving a largely glowing presentation of Hemingway's persona, it's a refreshing read after slogging through some of the hatchet jobs of more recent years.
Heartwarming, funny, tragic, and brilliant. A.E. Hotchner's account of his years-long friendship with one of America's greatest writers is astounding to read. The last part of the story detailing Hemingway's decline is heartbreaking. I read this book years before, and this recent re-reading was just as good as the first time I read it.
A factual chronicle of their friendship and shared experiences. An informative & enjoyable read. Appreciate the personal perspective. Not gossipy.
Hotchner did some great work here. He doesn't pretend to know the man better than he actually did.The memoirs start at their first meeting and are the perfect balance of narrative, anecdote and personal interpretation. The last 40-50 pages aren't as gripping (in my mind) as the first 250, but that is in no way a detraction from Hotchner's work. Hemingway himself becomes so different by the end of his life that it's like reading about a different man. Nonetheless, it goes a long way to answer some of the questions I'd always had.Loved it. Would, and do, recommend!
