There's a wire fence between my property and my neighbor's. Her dogs do not like anyone approaching the property. I was out in the back yard one day and they charged the fence barking and carrying on. I stayed where I was and faked a huge yawn. One dog stood looking at me in confusion, the other backed off. I loved this book for the whys of how our furry friends act, and for the practical advice. The yawn showed that I had no interest in being a threat and both dogs understood the signal.

For the price, I really like this book! As a speech and language pathologist (SLP) with a very "vocal" rescue dog that also communicates through non-verbal gestures, I was frustrated by not always being able to interpret what she was clearly trying to tell me--especially given the fact she had a bad past life before I adopted her. I was looking for not a "cutsey" book but something with more substance and evidence/facts. I like how this outlines different types of vocalizations and what it may mean, as well as provide visuals to illustrate some of the different behaviors. I think my dog is more vocal than most, so not all vocalizations she had that I wondered about were on there.Unfortunately, the one I was really curious about was not on there--a sort of howl/whine that she does if we have interacted with a dog on the walk then see them again, not sure if she WANTS to see the dog again or is telling me she does not want to interact again. If I let the leash loose, she continues walking and does not try to turn toward them, so I'm thinking she may not want to interact again. However, I wish I knew for sure! However, all in all I am very pleased. I would give it a 4.5 stars if I could, but since I cannot, I will give it 5 stars! Pleased overall. Nice book for any people who want to know more basic evidence/facts about dog behavior and communication.

My oldest son used this book in his 5th grade reading project. It's adult-informative and kid-friendly, combining solid facts and stories with cute thought bubbles and pictures of dogs doing funny things. A good resource into various dog behaviors and what they (might) mean. My son really enjoyed reading this book, as did I. This is one I wouldn't mind reading again and would probably go back and skim a lot if I owned it. I liked how everything was written. Easy to understand and fun with some very shortened stories that were interesting. I'm glad I've read this and would recommend it to anyone who has a dog or is going to get one. It doesn't take long to read and there is a lot of info. The pictures were really good and the captions cute. I liked how the book was laid out too. The end has some cool tidbits about dogs in general and some of the breeds. Definitely worth the read and my son said it didn't feel like a study sesh whatsoever!

A nicely composed and well-documented book that shows great pictures of many different breeds exhibiting various behaviors. This is an easy to read format with interesting factoids that keeps the book concise and yet entertaining. If your dog waives his/her tail in different ways, what exactly does that mean? If you lean over your dog, how does your dog react to that? Read it and learn something new. The more that you and your dog understand each other, the better bond in your relationship. This is the first book that I've found that reinforces several behaviors that I've observed over 40 years of owning and training dogs. All of the dogs that I've owned (or owned me) had their own distinct personalities. Once you learn to hear and speak 'dog' it makes it easier to understand both their needs and feelings. And for you new dog owners, always, and I mean always, remember that your dog will feed off of your emotions. Try to always remain calm. He or she will even be able to feel any tension from you holding their leash.I would heartily recommend that every new dog owner has a copy of this book on hand to help him/her bond quickly with their new puppy. It will be even more valuable for someone rescuing an adolescent/adult dog from a shelter. These dogs typically have their own unique behaviors and have to be taught to speak clearly so that their new owner can communicate effectively with them. Good luck to both of you!

I am a fan of this book. Stanley Coren offers plenty of researched information and personal stories regarding our animal companions. I have learned quiet a bit on how to communicate with animals in general. Naturally not every dog is the same and therefore some of the information in terms of language do not apply exactly, or at the very least apply in a modified sense. It is amazing how us humans misinterpret what animals are saying and can very easily keep our furry friends just by learning and understanding what they are telling us. Despite what some may say all animals communicate (even insects) it just isn't through the use of words like humans. When we take the opportunity to understand tail, muzzle, ear, noise, and etc signals we can form a much better bond. And we can also avoid aggression. One specific bit of information I had not known before was what the "humping" signifies. Dogs are not gay. Rather a sign of showing dominance over another (even stuffed animal) is through "humping" or rather mounting.

I bought this for my 8-year-old to help him understand and recognize the behaviors of our rescue dog as she gets acquainted with our family. It has helped him understand her responses and how to give her space when she is stressed out or feels threatened and to know when to engage with her in play.

Gave this to my ten year old niece who is still honing her reading skills. She LOVED this book and didn't put it down. I scored mucho points with my brother and sister-in-law.Thanks!
