With it I had a quicker grasp of the locations and special qualities of just about any archaeological site we might visit on an upcoming trip to the upland Maya regions. We will take this very valuable guide with us on our trip. We will get to a number of major sites, but we will have a fuller and very accessible appreciation of the Maya landscape.

Dated, but offers in a single book information on a great many places, including synoptic site descriptions with discussion of major edifices and monuments, the ancient history (as far as known), and notes on history of exploration from the earliest European contacts. Also has route maps with directions and travel tips. Many b&w and some color illustrations.
This book, while somewhat outdated, provides accurate and detailed information about the ruins in Guatemala in particular. The guides I traveled with all wanted to purchase it to enhance their information. The descriptions help you make decisions about where to go and having it with you enhances viewing. Places are generally easier to get to now.
I own another book by the Author on other archeological ruins and both books are written in a very clear and simple manner to be understood. In addition the enthusiasm about the archeological findings is infectious. How could a book on ruins be fun and clearly detailed? Well you will just have to read it if you have the interest and are going to visit those countries. In fact don't visit them if you haven't read the book.
