About the Author

Jamie Jensen was immersed in road trip culture from an early age. He grew up in Southern California, back when freeways were new, cheeseburgers cost a quarter, and every beach had a beachfront amusement park. After a three-year stint bumming around the country, making hay in Kansas, and ghostwriting a book for the Grateful Dead, Jamie set to work researching and writing Road Trip USA. Since then he's traveled more than 400,000 miles in search of the perfect stretch of two-lane blacktop. When not crisscrossing the country by car, he rides his bike whenever possible. Jamie lives with his wife, Catherine, and twin boys, Tom and Alex, in New York City, at the east end of the Lincoln Highway.

I was very pleasantly surprised by what a useful and fun little book this is. I'm a travel writer and photographer and I tend to buy a lot of travel books to help research new destinations (or to help me remember previous trips). I bought this book thinking it might be useful but not expecting it to be so nicely done. The writing and the photography (though the photos are pretty tiny) are both extremely well done.I like travel books that get to the point quickly and that are actually well-enough organize to be what they claim to be: a guidebook. This book is beautifully organized: it starts in Washington, moves down to Oregon and then devotes most of the book to California. The entries for places like the Monterey Aquarium, the Santa Cruz Pier, the Hearst Castle and many of the California state parks are complete enough to give you an overview and written in a friendly and helpful voice. Yes, you can find more detail in more in-depth books, I suppose, but truthfully I think a travel book is best when it is guiding you to interesting spots, not when it takes pages and pages explaining every last drop of history. The book has a great table of contents and a very accurate index, as well (don't buy a travel book that doesn't have a good index unless it is written in alphabetical format). Also, the book is indeed small enough to fit in the inside pocket of my denim jacket or in a purse (and certainly in a glove compartment). If you're thinking about driving this magnificent highway, buy this book: you will be thrilled that you did.

This book does not include everything that you need to know about the PCH, but makes a pretty good attempt. It's the most up to date book on places to stay, eat, and attractions to visit along the highway including necessary phone numbers and websites. (very handy!) It has pictures of the major attractions, small but effective maps in each of the major cities and in each state, and local event information for certain towns and cities. The author also tells when the best times to visit for things such as:whale watching in Oregon or Monarch butterfly gatherings in California. Another nice feature is that it tells the reader of local legends, past-times, festivals, and customs that shows what makes each little (and big) town distinctive from one another. What's more is that it is just small enough to fit inside a purse or back pocket for when you are ready to make that awesome roadtrip. The only thing I can really say that is disappointing about it, is that it just doesn't seem long enough. I wish he would've added another 50-100 pages of stories and attractions. Do not use this book as your only reference.

Used this book all the way from LAX to the Oregon border. It led us to so many things we would have missed otherwise! Lunch in Ferndale, spotting a whale off Patrick's Point, hiking all around Point Lobos are the first that come to mind but there were many more. Each place has just a brief little entry but it's kind of perfect to read out loud in the car without droning on and on. We'd see something coming up on the map and I'd have just enough time to quickly flip to the right page, read a couple sentences out loud, and quickly decide whether to keep driving or find a place to park. I will definitely take this book with me when we make the trip again, and when I got home I ordered the Olympic Peninsula version for a different trip!

A nice little pocket guide that was handy to refer to during our drive on the pacific coast highway from 200 miles north of San Francisco to Morro Bay. It is not a guidebook with detailed information, but a summary reference for the main towns and sights you will pass. The book was very useful to alert us of what was coming up ahead and to help us plan our stops at towns, beaches or other attractions. It is a nice thin size to take along with you, but make sure you also bring a detailed map. If you drive the PCH, make sure you have plenty of gas because most of our drive was remote and gas station free.

I expected more from this book, but it gives an excellent overview from Washington to San Diego.I am currently in planning for this trip, and this book is the backbone of my planning. Surprisingly, there are limited resources for this road trip style journey. Especially for such a famous highway. I had been looking for maps of just the three states and only came up with junk. I had to buy a Rand McNally maps book for $45. The maps in this book are great for a basic route, and there are plenty of places I don't think I'd have known about using just google search and maps.It is nice and small to travel with, a great overview of the complete highway, and far better than anything else I have browsed on Amazon or in a book store.

Disappointed. Bought this just a couple days before traveling the PCH and didn't have time to review it before the trip. It provided good info if I was going to take a lot of time to sight see, but I was more interested in scenic points, hotels and gas stations. IF you really want to know history, background of the area, and want to find the out of the way places, this may be of help.

Good information, but the book is tiny and the print is very small, making it very hard to read.

Found the book to be spot on for our October 2012 trip down the PCH. We had planned to make the trip North to South before finding the book. The book details the trip in that fashion. We stayed and ate at many of the recommended establishments and greatly enjoyed them. We did the trip in a quick pace, one week, and we were still able to appreciate the many sites, fauna, and flora spoken about in the book.We saw elk about the location the book said to be aware of them in Northern California. About the only thing we found lacking in the book was detail of restaurants/lodgings south of Santa Barbara that was shared for the rest of the Pacific Coast. Also, we found Eureka to be overstated. Some of the mentioned side trips were very worthwhile...Long Beach, WA, Anderson Valley, CA, and Leggett Drive-Thru Redwood to name a few. You can do the trip with this book alone, though we had a road atlas and GPS.
