I started reading Thirst on an early morning flight, thinking I'd read for a few pages until I fell asleep. Instead, I found myself flipping through pages for the next 4 hours, wide awake, fully enthralled. Scott's story is raw, real, and goes into detail that both made me laugh and brought me to tears on multiple occasions.Even though Scott has created a world-changing organization, he tells about it in such an approachable way. His character is relatable, and it’s refreshing to read honestly about his journey as a whole, including the not-so-good paths that played a role in leading him to this ultimately wonderful destination. This book makes you examine yourself, your purpose, and enforces that it’s never too late to utilize your skills and passions to make a difference. That doing something small is better than doing nothing, that if you’re working hard and doing the right thing, you’ll find a way to land on your feet, and not to let people tell you “no†when you know you’re right.
A few years ago I donated $100 to Charity: Water for my Grandma's Christmas present. I remember her and I being instantly delighted when I showed Grandma my phone with how much clean drinking water that $100 represented. Ever since then I've been intrigued with the way that Charity: Water have gone about their mission, but I didn't know much about co-founder Scott Harrison.Thirst is more than a fascinating and engaging memoir about a guy that had a few life altering experiences, and wanted to change the world. It's a call to action, or a playbook rather on how if we believe in something enough, all of us have the power to do something about it and make it a reality. Thankfully for all of us, Scott chose clean drinking water for some of the poorest regions in the world as his "something".The book itself is a page turner, a perfect length that I was able to read in one sitting from LA to Kau'ai. Scott comes across as a personable and humble guy, and honest in the way that he pretty much tells us that he was making it up as he went. I think that was the biggest takeaway for me and what other readers will appreciate, is that like most things in life there is no perfect time to start something and you'll never be ready - you just need to start and figure it out as you go.As an atheist the one thing that I thought I wasn't going to be able to stomach as easily, are the many references to religion and christianity. But throughout the book Scott doesn't come off preachy at all and if anything his faith really made me appreciate where he was coming from as it was his faith that made this happen.Overall, I recommend this book not just for people in the non profit or social impact space but anyone that wants to create something that is bigger than just themselves. Scott reiterates over and over in this book, that the success of Charity: Water is not just about him but rather his team, his board members, volunteers and donors that all come together to make this happen.Great book, engaging read and it will inspire you to do something great.
Thirst takes the ready into an eloquent yet humble journey of Charity: Water's birth and Scott Harrison's defining moments of his life that brought about the transformation of the word charity. Scott humbly and inspiringly speaks about his faith and he is able to do so from the lens of love, which is the core of the Christian faith. Yet he does not push the idea arrogantly; he encourages his readers to "put on love" and see charity as a way of life rather than an action at one point in your life. His faith is driven by actions that began with his experience at Mercy Ships and "culminated" (culminated in quotes because as much as it was an end to his journey of finding the 1 issue to focus on, it was the beginning of something extraordinary) in the formation of Charity: Water not as another charity but as a vision of empowerment, change and action. His actions required perseverance. There were various moments when the balance tipped towards failure and giving up as Charity: Water experienced storms and moments of intense decision making. Yet, the only way Scott overcame that was by reaching out to others for help, building an amazing team of people and persevering on the vision that had been born out of faith and actions.I highly recommend this book. Not simply because 100% of all funds will go towards giving water to people around the world but also because in this day and age and forever, "putting on love" will break through social, political and economic barriers to give life and a future to people.
My wife and I are half way through this book. We read a few chapters before bed at night and we can't put it down. We're having a book binge as opposed to a Netfilx binge! We've heard Scott talk several times and thought this book might just be a retelling of those stories...it turns out that there is new insight, stories and a much deeper look at Scott's life that you don't get from just hearing his compelling talks. This book is well worth the read! We will be buying this as Christmas presents for our family!
