First I want to provide some background, I am a 3rd time mom who has been on the natural journey with our family for a decade now. Even though I am familiar with many of the blogs that this author has been featured on, I was previously unfamiliar with her blog entirely. I can't even remember how I came across this book, because I really wasn't looking to get a new resource on infant feeding...but I am so glad I did! This book has a lot to offer even though much of it isn't exactly "new" to me and/or it fits really well with ways we already cook and nourish ourselves, with just enough added knowledge and tips to make it an awesome resource that hasn't really left my countertop since it arrived (it lays open nicely too, which is a big bonus when you're cooking). Thankfully other reviewers covered how this book is NOT just about infant feeding, but really whole family nutrition, because that was what pushed me over to buying it. It has great info for starting an infant with foods and then transitional recipes and ideas as they age into joining the whole family more and more. So far, we have done a lot of the purees (plus we are doing some baby led weaning) and our daughter is loving everything thankfully. As others have noted, I love the suggestions of healthy fats to combine with the fruits, veggies, and meats. I am not as keen on the dairy for younger infants (milk and yogurt anyway, but we are big butter fans admittedly), but her book makes it easy to choose a different path if anything doesn't resonate with you (in our case, coconut alternatives work great). I am super excited to move into the whole family recipes. The book is an easy read, yet packed with great info...she makes it easily digestible (pun intended I guess, hahaha). I am very guilty of excitedly buying books and then not really utilizing them as I intended. This buy hasn't turned out that way, I am thrilled with just how much use we are getting from it and look forward to exploring more and more of the recipes. Wish I could go back to our first guy and have such a book companion for our feeding adventures!
I LOVE this book! I brought it when my daughter was six months old and it's been great. We decided to do more of a baby led weaning approach over purees, but this book still gives me great ideas on how to combine foods and fats in optimal ways for my baby. I also plan on making the purees when she moves onto feeding herself with a spoon. I've been cooking the recipes from the family and toddler section for me and my husband. They are all amazing! At first my husband was confused why I was planing meals for us from a baby book but now he grabs it and asks for his favorites! You really won't be disappointed in this book, whether you have a young baby you want to feed purees or do BLW, or even if you want some recipes for yourself!
I want to give this 5 stars because I love her blog and she has great recipes. Many of the baby food recipes are 2 or 3 ingredients (vegetable plus sea salt or vegetable plus broth plus sea salt) and an entire page is dedicated to each. I didn't play $16 to for "Steam vegetable/fruit. Puree with a pinch of sea salt" on multiple pages. Just stick to the free recipes on her blog.
I bought this book after previewing the first few pages. A lot of the recipes used ingredients we have at home and several things we would encourage eating. After receiving the book, however, I was very disappointed to see undercooked eggs and raw milk recommended to give children. I agree with introducing nutrient dense, wholesome foods to children, but it's just plain irresponsible to even recommend unpasteurized foods to a small child given how listeria, e coli, and other infections can be fatal to an underdeveloped immune system. I can't really return the book without paying a hefty shipping fee, so I feel like I've inadvertently enabled the author to peddle irresponsible advise to new parents.
Absolutely incredible book! The pictures are so beautiful and the recipes are to die for...and it's EASY! Traditional foods do not have to take hours to cook. Renee does a fantastic job of explaining why these whole foods serve our bodies and our children's bodies and brains the best.
I've been a big fan of Renee's website for several years and was thrilled to recently add her book to my collection. Her recipes are healthy, simple, and do-able for a busy mom. Many of them are enjoyed by toddlers and older kids so I don't have to make special meals for just the baby. I love her suggestions on making larger amounts to freeze for future use and reduce daily cooking. The photographs are beautiful and the font is a good size for glancing at across the counter while working.
This book has been a favorite. I didn't get it till my little one was a year old already, so we were past the puree stage. But I've been able to use a lot of the recipes for easy, delicious ways to pack a lot of nutrition into my toddler's diet. He loooves all the soups we've tried. I have given this book to 3 friends who are expecting/have children and they've all found it helpful. Renee's blog is also a favorite, and she posts great tips & ideas on her Instagram page as well.
This cook book is absolutely worth every penny! Not only is it gorgeously put together but the food is absolutely delicious! The liver pate is my families favorite so far, but we have just begun our food journey to better health with this lovely cookbook as one of our guides! (Along with nourishing traditions) Our 8 and a half month old is enjoying lots of new foods thanks to the inventive and yummy way to prep them laid out here!
