Initially I checked this book out from the Kindle library, read it once, then twice, and then purchased.I have kept discus in the past (10 plus years ago) and this book served as a refresher for maintaining discus including water quality and heating requirements. It further explored compatible tankmates, breeding habits, and recommendations when to separate the fry from their parents. It also provided food recommendations for the fry and the variety of foods for adult discus.Liked: The author did not push any specific brands of equipment, just general characteristics, which I liked since it empowers the hobbyist to make their own decision in regards to equipment brand selection.Challenges: For some novice discus care givers this may be somewhat intimidating, if you are not experienced or familiar with fishkeeping in general. Rest assured, any pet store that is worth its weight in salt, will not steer you wrong in product selection, since many do not work for commissions.
I've had discus tanks in the past with moderate success and now, after reading this book, I have an idea why they weren't more successful. The book is good for beginners and also for people like me who already have some experience. Inside you will find all kinds of things like history of keeping discus fish, what their natural habitat is like, the other types of fish you might consider putting in the tank with them and, of course, specifics on their care and feeding. Some pretty pictures of different types of discus will give you an idea of the kinds you want in your tank!
This book had a very good flow to the content and the examples are very clear and chaulk-full of important details. The pictures are amazing and illustrations just as good. I would highly recommend this as a great read to Discus fish owners even if you do not intend on doing anything more than enjoying watching them swim around in your tank.
Great for the beginner and the price. doesn't go into great depth on a lot of areas but does the job in teaching the fundamentals at the price it very well worth it. I have other books that fill in the blanks for me as I was just starting to look into discus as my next pursuit so this was just right.
I believe this book covers the major aspects of caring for discus. Discus are difficult to keep, but I believe there only difficult if you don't know their specific living parameters.
It was brief for me but, with great elements to deal with discus fishes which are pretty difficult. I felt I need more information about food and its preparation, like recipes.... But, it was good
Great book.. Have been out if the Hobby for a while.. This Book was informative and hit the basics I needed to get back into raising and breeding Discus again!!
